Class Details

Are there age requirements for classes?

  • Anyone who is 18 years or older can participate in hands-on classes. Demonstration-style classes are open to all ages, but age four and over is suggested.
  • We also offer parent and kid classes (ages range eight and up) and family classes (ages range four and up).
  • Wine and beverage classes are open only to participants 21 years or older.

I’m a beginner and don’t cook much at home. Are the hands-on classes for the beginner or experienced cook?
Our hands-on classes are a great fit for every experience level. Our expert instructors will walk you through the entire day, making you feel at ease in the kitchen with your fellow students.

Will we be eating the food we are preparing?
Yes! In our hands-on classes, including Boot Camps, half the fun is eating the food you’ve worked so hard to prepare.

Do you offer accommodations for dietary/allergy restrictions?
We do! Please note that our kitchens are not allergen free, so please notify us of your dietary restriction at the time of registration.

How many people are in each class?
Class size varies depending on the program and campus. Boot Camps range from 12–18 people. Hands-on cooking or baking classes range from 16–18. Demonstration-style and beverages explorations typically range from 25–60. Our goal is to provide the best learning environment for all students.

Where do I park? What time should I arrive?
Approximately five–seven days prior to class you will hear from us regarding the particulars of your class, including timing, parking, location of class, etc.

Dress Code

Is there a dress code for classes?
For our demonstrations and non-kitchen classes, there is no dress code. However, we do have a dress code for any hands-on cooking or baking classes that take place in our teaching kitchens.

Dress code for hands-on cooking and baking classes:

  • Long pants.
  • Closed-toe, non-slip shoes. No Sandals.
  • Long sleeve shirts preferred.
  • NO shorts, tank tops, open-toed shoes, sandals or high heels.

For Boot Camps:

  • Loose fitting black trousers.
  • Closed-toe, non-slip shoes. No Sandals.
  • Shirt to wear under chef’s jacket.
  • Note: We will provide you with a chef’s jacket. Please review our size chart for more information.

Will you provide me with an apron or any other cooking attire?
Yes! We will provide you with an apron.

Are there requirements for hair or jewelry?
For safety and sanitation reasons, hair must be pulled back so that it fits under a chef’s hat. Jewelry is not permitted except for one plain ring and one watch.

Boot Camp FAQs

Are Boot Camps good for the non-experienced cook?
Although our Boot Camp programs are designed to accommodate all levels of expertise, we highly recommend you start your CIA training off with our Skill Development or our Basic Boot Camp. However, feel free to take any class you want, our only pre-requisite for Boot Camp is a passion for food and a willingness to learn. If you enjoy cooking and want to enhance your skills, we have a camp that is right for you.

How do I find my uniform size for Boot Camp?
We ask all boot camp participants bring their own black pants and wear non-slip shoes. To find out sizing for chef jackets please refer to our sizing chart.

I have my own knives; do I need to bring them for Boot Camp?
Equipment needed for class will be made available for use during your program. We also offer tool kits at a special Boot Camp price.

Dining, Gift Cards, and Accessibility

Can I dine at your restaurant before or after my class?
Yes! We have amazing restaurants at all of our locations. We recommend making a reservation in advance, since most restaurants run on the student schedule. Please note, a meal at a CIA restaurant is included in the Boot Camp tuition, and attendees are sent the schedule of activities prior to arrival.

Can I register for classes online using a gift card? If not, what is the process for registration?
Yes, you can register for classes online with your gift card or by calling 1-800-888-7850.

Can I purchase one of your classes as a gift and receive a gift certificate to give to them?
You can purchase a gift card as a gift, and the recipient will need to register for their class of choice by registering online or by calling 1-800-888-7850.

Are your kitchens wheelchair accessible?
No, our kitchens are not wheelchair accessible.

Do you offer accommodations for disabilities?
We are able to provide reasonable accommodations. Please let us know how we might assist you.

Refund Policy

What is the Payment & Refund Policy?
Full payment for classes is required upon registration.

  • 14-days’ notice of withdrawal is required to receive a full refund, less a $15 transaction fee (with the exception of classes purchased with a gift certificate).
  • No refund will be available for class withdrawals between seven and 13 days prior to the class start date; however, you may transfer to another class date, subject to a $15 transaction fee.
  • No refunds or transfers will be available for class withdrawals with less than six days’ notice.

Cancellations: In the event a class must be canceled by the CIA, it is the policy of the college to notify each participant by phone and e-mail within 24 hours of the decision to cancel. The CIA reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment at any time; however, our practice is to cancel classes with 21 days’ notice. All students will receive a full refund (unless the class was purchased with a gift certificate) or a transfer to another course, if applicable.

Is the Chef’s Class or Family Funday a hands-on class? Do we get to cook or just watch?
These are interactive demonstrations in our Napa Valley Vintners Theater. Our chefs are ready to answer your questions and show you how to create new dishes, ingredients, and techniques. You’ll take home recipes and new ideas.

Is food served in the wine/beverage classes?
Depending on the class. We will often serve a cookie or crackers as a small snack with the class. Food and beverage pairing classes do have both food and beverage for participants.

When Eventbrite sales end, can I still purchase a ticket or is it sold out?
Tickets can be purchased on-site if the event is not sold out. We will make a note on the Eventbrite listing when a class has sold out.

Can my teen, who is very experienced in the kitchen, attend a class unaccompanied by an adult?
We do ask that any student under the age of 18 be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Is food served in the wine/beverage classes?
The food in our wine/beverage classes is supplemental to enhance the tasting. A full meal is not included in these classes, but feel free to join us at our campus restaurant, Nao, after your class. Learn more and make a reservation.
