Apple Sage Dressing

Use this recipe as a stuffing for your turkey or a dressing you can bake separately. Additions like browned sausage, smoked ham, or pecans are natural variations for a hearty option.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups cubed bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken broth or stock
  • 2 skin-on Red Delicious apples, cored and diced
  • 2 teaspoons chopped sage
  • 1 teaspoon chopped thyme
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 egg white, lightly beaten

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  2. Spread the bread pieces in an even layer in a shallow baking pan. Bake in the middle of the oven until dry and lightly toasted, about 15 minutes. Cool the bread and reserve for later use.

  3. Melt the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the broth, apples, sage, and thyme. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat.

  4. In a large bowl, combine the apple mixture with the bread cubes, parsley, and egg white.

  5. Spoon into a buttered 9×13-inch baking dish. Bake until golden brown on top, about 45 minutes. Serve hot, directly from the pan.
