Use this recipe as a stuffing for your turkey or a dressing you can bake separately. Additions like browned sausage, smoked ham, or pecans are natural variations for a hearty option.
Ingredients
- 6 cups cubed bread
 - 2 tablespoons butter
 - 1 yellow onion, chopped
 - 2 celery stalks, chopped
 - 2 1/2 cups chicken broth or stock
 - 2 skin-on Red Delicious apples, cored and diced
 - 2 teaspoons chopped sage
 - 1 teaspoon chopped thyme
 - Kosher salt, to taste
 - Ground black pepper, to taste
 - 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
 - 1 egg white, lightly beaten

Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
 -
Spread the bread pieces in an even layer in a shallow baking pan. Bake in the middle of the oven until dry and lightly toasted, about 15 minutes. Cool the bread and reserve for later use.
 -
Melt the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the broth, apples, sage, and thyme. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat.
 -
In a large bowl, combine the apple mixture with the bread cubes, parsley, and egg white.
 -
Spoon into a buttered 9×13-inch baking dish. Bake until golden brown on top, about 45 minutes. Serve hot, directly from the pan.
